I doubt if I could add anything to the list that other have given you.

Go to utube, type in names like Robert Merrill, it will pull up live performances of him singing on TV. Off to the side there will little squares of other sites featuring Merrill and other singers. Do Different names, Franco Corelli, Richard Tucker, Jussi Bjoerling,---It will also have sites where baritones improvise Hi- C's. Nicolai Gedda is my favorite, there is one on his site where he sings a hi d. I like the SHerril Milnes one also-especially where he improvises a hi c. Of course there is a lot of garbage there also. Gedda tries to sing when he is very sick and it just doesn't work. Why some fool had to put that in there is beyond my wildest dreams..

Enjoy

Here's a few:

If you like coloratura fireworks, try Sumi Jo and Natalie Dessay, and perhaps Diana Damrau

If you like CROSSOVER:

Try Sarah Brightman and Katherine Jenkins, again, I sate SARAH BRIGHTMAN IS A WONDERFUL SINGER BUT SHE IS NOT NEVER EVER EVER AN OPERA SINGER!!!

If you like Mozart or Strauss try Renee Fleming and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa

To Bdig85 above me, Sarah Brightman is NOT an opera singer. She sings what the music people call POPERA, not opera. If you listen carefully, you'd see that the technique she uses is totally different than the real opera singers. The same goes to Amici Forever and Lara Fabian (heck, she's not even a popera singer, she's a real POP singer). I know that the members of Amici Forever sing opera, but as Amici Forever itself, they don't sing opera, they sing popera just like Brightman. If you wanna know who the REAL opera singers are, you should listen more to the likes of Renee Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas, Rosa Ponselle, Grace Bumbry, Bryn Terfel, Lauritz Melchior etc.

Anyway, to answer kickarse's question, I love many singers and voice types, but somehow I'm such a sucker for coloratura voices, esp. coloratura sopranos. I really love Sumi Jo. But I also like the majestic presence of dramatic voices like Jessye Norman and Birgit Nilsson. And then, I also adore the sweet pure timbre of Kathleen Battle's voice. Other fave opera singers incl. Anna Moffo, Leontyne Price and Philippe Jaroussky. Oh, forgot to mention, Cecilia Bartoli is one fine opera singer as well.

Natalie Dessay is by far the greatest soprano performing today. Not does she have an amazing voice, but she is also an astounding actress. I was lucky enough to see her in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera. She has a few DVDs out. I recommend her Manon and La Fille du regiment.

There are so, so many. I will always love Pavarotti. What a great voice! Leontyne Price is perhaps my favorite female artist. I am so glad I got to hear both of them in person.

My favourite arias are mostly written for the soprano voice, so I may not be much help. However, you may want to try these:

O mio babbino caro

Una voce poco fa

The whole "Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart (all the arias are magnificent...and the main male characters are baritones)

Ah, non credea mirarti

Ah non giunge

Si, mi chiamano Mimi

Vissi d'arte

Un bel di vedremo

Sempre libera

Caro nome

'Bell Song' from Lakme

Der holle rache (famous 'Queen of the Night' aria) - it's in German, but it's a must-hear!

Nessun dorma

Che gelida manina

Il mio tesoro

Dalla sua pace

La ci darem la mano

E lucevan le stelle

La donna e mobile - very, very famous

And here are my favourite opera singers:

Kiri Te Kanawa

Edita Gruberova

Maria Callas

Mirella Freni

Lucia Popp

Frederica von Stade

Anne Sofie von Otter

Cecilia Bartoli

Luciano Pavarotti

Placido Domingo

Hermann Prey (awesome baritone!)

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

Vladimir Chernov

Nicolai Ghiaurov

It comes down to two for me - Andrea Bocelli, and Tarja Turunen (I'm not sure if she's even an opera singer, but her voice sounds...operatic somehow.)

My favorite of Bocelli's songs is, of course, Con Te Partiro (I Will Go With You). who hasn't heard it? ^^

And my favorite of Tarja's songs would have to be either Ghost Love Score, Nemo, or Kueloma Tekee Taiteilijan. Look her up - She used to be in the band Nightwish. They're really good =]

My favorite opera singer is Sarah Brightman. She has a beautiful voice, very ethereal. Actually, she's the only one I listen to on a regular basis. I love her songs "Un Jour Il Viendra" and "Anytime Anywhere." I also like the new one she did with Alessandro Safina, "Sarai Qui." With his very masculine and deep voice, they made an interesting pair. I've also tried Amici and Lara Fabian. Songs that seems to pop up a lot in opera is "Nessun Dorma" and "Nella Fantasia."
