It would never have passed as friendly, that comment by Alawaschool, here in Athlone. A pity it is that that person could not have been more instructive than destructive. Someone commented on music snobbery, and I must agree that Alawaschool needs a dose of antidote for that terrible affliction. But, Asker, though I don't have a good example for you, I offer my encouragment. I know only a little about music from a technological or historical standpoint, but I felt the sting of the unfriendly remarks. My expertise is in conservation horticulture, but I always learn from people who have varying skill and knowledge in my area. Open minds can do that. I'll be off now, Asker. As someone else said, Enjoy your music.

I'm using 'Classical Music' in the widest sense covering music from Pre-Bach through 20th Century Avant Garde Classical Music.

In contemporary music, like in Stravinsky and Bartok, u can find a lot of polyrhytmic music. But also in this Impromptu by Chopin with six against double four though most of the pianist begin with six and then in some passages shift to a double three

But remember that polyrhytm is somehow implied for example in the early baroque 6/8 that in the philological renditions is often performed in a particular way that echoes the superimpostion of 2/4 and 3/4

There still seems to be a lot of confusion over what polyrhythm actually is. Playing six notes against four in Chopin certainly isn't it. Polyrhythm is when two different time signatures occur simultaneously.

The first link below takes you to a polyrhythmic (and polytempo) section from the 'Putnam's Camp' movement of Charles Ives' 'Three Places in New England'. Keep listening to the end of the movement and you will hear lots of polyrhythmic passages, albeit all written-out within the framework of the underlying metre.

In the second extract, you will sections of 4/4 against 7/8 in a jazz context.

THAT's polyrhythm.
