We r 16, all girls. we've been learning 3 yrs.
we wanna do a trio for a party, so we need a piece that's beautiful and maybe soft, but not too sad. it cant be too tricky, either. remember we're 16 yr olds, not experienced musicians. :)
so what pieces do you recommend?
any helpful info appreciate. thx a bunch!

I would suggest the Serenade for String Trio by Zoltán Kodály. It's a beautiful piece and no too difficult to play. The Mozart Divertimento mentioned above would be a REAL challenge if you're not experienced musicians.

The site www.lastrestmusic.com has GREAT books of MANY trios. You would need to get the Music for Three (obviously) - but if you want to stretch your possibilities, get the PIANO PART, too - that way, you can use a variety of the trio parts with OR without piano -and WITH piano, you can do duet, trio, or quartet - they ALWAYS work. These are not cheap . . .but a bargain. Perhaps this set (no piano) will work for you:

http://www.lastresortmusic.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=320&Itemid=42

- which is one of the INTERMEDIATE Music for Three, or you can get the original (adult?)the Music for Three that I already mentioned. A set of trio books will run you about $50 - will your SCHOOL spring for this? Yes, there is a VIOLA book!

For easy things without piano, look for the Mixed Bag series from Chester Music. They have 3 parts - again, your violist might have to re-do in the alto clef.

This is SO cool that you are doing this! Have fun! I play chamber music as a big portion of my living - it is SO much fun, and I make $$$ doing it! If ONE of you pays for the books, they should keep them and take them to college - betcha you get $$ work off these. I own many volumes like this, and they PRINT money for us.

I would, without a doubt, recommend the String Trio in B Flat, D. 471, by Franz Schubert. It's a beautiful, delicate piece that is not particularly difficult. The score (pre-copyright) is available at:

http://imslp.org/wiki/Trio_for_Strings%2C_D.471_%28Schubert%2C_Franz%29

You can play just the first page if you like, to shorten it and limit the amount of thematic material. I've played it, and loved every second.

I have also just finished composing a string trio for student ensemble. Contact me for more details at thesunsetstudio@gmail.com

There are a lot of works under "Easy Chamber Music":

http://beststudentviolins.com/sheetmusic.html#chambermusic

especially, if you will scroll down, under STRING QUARTET

These Latham publications are easy to read and work just fine without the second violin part. I would look at one of the following:

Album of Easy String Quartets: Vol I, Vol II

Collected Quartets: Vol 1 (includes Pachelbel Canon), Vol 2
