Question:
Making a student movie. Hints for good instrumental pieces?

Basically, the short film is about a guy whom loses his mother and is more or less driven to madness by grief. Light and happy affair eh?

I've been looking for music to go with it. I need something a bit somber, possibly ominous (not to the point of a horror film but a bit stranger?,) or a bit erratic for when he begins to slip?

I'm looking for classical or modern instrumental pieces. No thrashing guitars or anything too over powering...

Anywho, any help is welcome and thanks to anyone whom suggests things.

I hope you don't mind me take apart your work, since you have provided us with the outline.

1. Death of mother

Suggestions:

a. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7: 2nd Movement - Allegretto

b. Mozart's Requiem: Lacrimosa

2. First Signs of Madness

Suggestions:

a. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6: 2nd Movt - Allegro con grazia

b. Beethoven's Piano Sonata 'Pathetique': Rondo-finale

3. Last Stages of Madness

a. Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata: 1st Movt - Adagio sostenuto-Presto

b. Beethoven's Appasionata Sonata: 3rd Movt - Allegro ma non troppo

c. Richard Strauss: Dance of Seven Veils from 'Salome'.

d. Mozart's Requiem: Dies Irae, Kyrie and/or Confutatis

Pardon me, but I'm a bit partial to Beethoven... So these are the music I think might be suitable. Not necessarily in that order, though. You can get some of these music for free in the internet.

So there. Try them on! Happy editing!

Death of the mother:

Charles Ives, the unanswered question.

Edvard Grieg, Ases Death from Peer Gynt

Listen carefully to the unanswered question, you could do a lot more with it. It's a Philosophical piece of music. The trumpet keeps repeating the question about something like the meaning of life. The Flutes try to find the answer, but they keep arguing until the point where they finally start fighting.

First signs of madness:

Mahler, Scherzo from Symphony nr. 6

Shostakovich, several pieces from Symphony nr. 10

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber

Rich strings, slow-moving emotional piece expressing grief and building to a climax. This piece was played for the burial of President Franklin Roosevelt. It's incredibly moving.

Perhaps you could use the sounds of glass breaking afterward to suggest his life fell apart - was shattered. It's an idea.

Best wishes.

Personally I love Tchaikovsky. His symphonies 5 & 6 are deep, intense, and moving. I also love the suggestion of Barber's Adagio For Strings, thats a good choice. Mahler and Sibelius are also good.

If there is a resolution at the end of your short film, use bittersweet symphony as the music for that scene. That song is incredible

I suggest these two bands:

1.Explosions In The Sky : Great instrumental post-rock band.

2.Camel : Personally,I think this instrumental progressive rock band is the best in your case. This band also has some strange tunes which might actually help your cause.

Cheers! :]
