Question:
Classical Music Lovers: who also love the "oldies" of "pop" songs-mine's "Ode to Billy Joe" - what is yours?

Of the songs by the really great "oldies"(if that's the proper appellation -?), such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Peggy Lee and the likes, what are your favorites?

Reminisce if you wish; no, please do.

I was going to request a limit of three(3); but list how many you wish; just don't let it get out of hand, okay? Use your own discretion, but mature judgement.

Thank you,

Alberich

The pop music which still does it for me is from the late 1950s and early 1960s. the Everly Brothers, Ricky (later called Rick) Nelson, The Beach Boys, Billy Fury, The Sadows and many many more. (I can hear all you Americans saying 'The Shadows?' but they were big in the UK.)

When I say the pop music 'which still does it for me' I'm telling the truth but I'm not sure how much is real love of the music and how much is pure nostalgia. Paul Anka's Diana, for example reminds me of a beautiful girl of that name with whom I was hopelessly in love when I was 15. It was awful because she was barely aware of my existance. Perhaps nostalgia is a good thing ... and not all of mine is as full of angst as Paul Anka's Dianna. (His next record was Lonely Boy which, for me, was rather appropriate!)

By the time the Beatles came on the scene I had discovered Beethoven and The Beatles were an irrelevance. Nowadays I like the early Beatles stuff. Get to Sergeant Pepper and I start yawning.

In short, I think pop is youth and youth is precious. But one does eventually ourgrow it. Then the pop we enjoy is the blast-from-the-past type. And we're back to nostalgia.

This is rather lengthy but I don't think it is 'out of hand.' If you want to see my ‘of of hand’ list, go to a previous answer of mine at:

well I love Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, pop, rock, easy listening, smooth jazz, R&B, country, disco, top 40 hits. I have a wide array of music loves! But if I had only one song to pick as my all time favorite classic oldie it would be: "Abraham, Martin & John...by Dion (1968)

Loving many kinds of music, I have many pieces that might fit this criterion. I love the 'Rat Pack' stuff a lot and sometimes I love to listen to that. I also love Tony Bennett - 'Have You Met Miss Jones?' being one of my favourites.

I also love a lot of 60s stuff but one of the songs that I find the most uplifting is 'So Happy Togther' by The Turtles. It's so joyous!

The rest is just too much to mention but that gives a flavour.
