Question:
William Walton's First Symphony?

I've recently been a little obsessed with Walton's Symphony No. 1 in B-flat minor, and as a result I've really been wanting to get my hands on an orchestral score for it.

I went to the downtown library in Portland, OR, near where I live, to see if they had a score for the piece in their collection and for the first time I was unable to find what I was looking for. They have a score for Walton's Second Symphony (which I really don't enjoy as much as the first), but not the first one. I also checked around online and found that most study scores for this piece go for at least $80. I just don't have that kind of money to throw around right now.

Does anyone know where I could get a copy of the score for Walton's First Symphony for a reasonable price? (I wouldn't argue against a free digital copy either, but I know the work is not yet in the public domain.)

Most larger metropolitan U.S. libraries have a computer-linked network to search for requested books and scores. If the score is in the system someplace in the nation, it will be sent to your town when it has been returned to the local branch where it 'resides.'

There is no charge for this service, just the random wait.

best of luck.

I doubt you will get a free digital copy - certainly not legally. I checked the OUP website (publishers of Walton's music) and the study score is listed at £35 (around $60), which they might ship to you directly. Unfortunately, copyright scores ARE expensive.

You should also check-out Moeran's Symphony in G minor - very close in style to the Walton.

I've found an antiquarian copy of the Full Score (not the study score) for $64.00 (inc. shipping), if that's of interest to you.

As you don't allow Y!A mail direct, if you drop me a note in my Y!A mailbox, I'll send you the URL by return as my reply. For obvious reasons, if I posted it here now and anyone else happened to be in search of the same, you could get beaten to it... :-)

All the best,
