What are some of the best classical music pieces? Well, from any period actually not just the classical period. I'm looking for soul moving pieces like Bach's prelude to his cello suite #1 or Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man type of caliber.

Going along the lines of your examples, I might suggest the following to try out:

Bach - Partita in D minor (Movement 5. Chaconne) BWV 1004

Barber - Adagio for Strings

Mussorgsky - Night on a Bare Mountain

Richard Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra

Verdi - Requiem (Movement 2. Dies Irae)

There isn't a best in music. What's important is the instrumentalist took the time to pour out there feelings to write out a song. I love prelude along with a few others:

The Entertainer always seems to cheer me up. I absolutely adore the piano and trumpet version, i remember stumbling on this piece on my birthday along with my favorite musical cartoon.
