If you're thinking of the one used in the films Fantasia and Prizzi's Honor, that's the Schubert. I've heard a piano-accompanied version, so I'm guessing that's the one you're referring to. It's usually considered a soprano's part, though it can be transcribed for alto, tenor, or bass-baritone, as any piece can be.

Mozart did not compose and Ave Maria. There is the Schubert, and there is the Bach-Gounod. Choose - and since they can be sung in any key, give us a clue what performance you are speaking of.

Some people might know that Mozart composed the Kegelstatt Trio while playing skittles. Far fewer people know that he wrote an Ave Maria for basso profundo whilst on the toilet (his many letters are splattered with toilet and body function references).
