It amazes me that so many people are willing to trash the saxophone, and quite obviously know very little about the instrument. Yes, it is very easy to learn the fingerings, however you don't just put your fingers down and "play in tune." In fact, the teacher Donald Sinta best explained the correct tone and pitch on the saxophone as "voicing" the note, in other words make your throat and oral cavity the same as if you were singing the note. This becomes especially important when you begin to explore the altissimo range (expanded range) which is required for so much of the more advanced literature anymore. Factor in the other extended techniques (multiphonics, tonguing effects, etc.) and you in fact have a very complicated beast on your hands.

You ask a good question... but in reality a seasoned pro won't tell you his instrument is hard to play cause for him it isn't.

For a beginner the violin is pretty tough and the sax has the easiest fingering of any instrument. A beginner will sound pretty rough for a while on both these instruments because even though the notes will come fast and easy on a sax, the emboucher and tone will take 2 or 3 years to get beyond the sounding like a "sick duck stage" ha, (a slight exag there)

Really you should choose the one you like the most because they both have their own hurdles to get over and after a few years of studying either one, you'll start to sound pretty good on it and you'll be way past the stage of worrying about which one is harder to play.

Honey, it's music and you love it. Do whatever you want. I have heard, however, that both flute and violin are tough to learn. If you start on either of these, try to buy/rent an instrument as cheaply as possible. If you find that you're fabulous, great! Indulge in new, expensive instruments. Otherwise, give the cheapies the best workout you can. And if neither the flute nor the violin works out for you, do try other instruments which will be a little more forgiving. A lot of people play the guitar because the guitar is easy to play. Playing it well still requires hard work, so it can give you plenty of challenge. Good luck!

I play the alto saxophone, and i would say that it is probably easer to play than the violin because when it comes to sound/tone you just press the keys down and most likely that note comes out. although playing the tenor saxophone is a different story because of the shear amount of air it takes to play.

the violin is alot harder. i mean just look at the difficulty you could get to with violin and the difficulty you can get with a small saxophone Did you ever listen to Paganini songs? Stuff like that is almost impossible to learn. Saxophone just has hard rhythm and is manly used for jazz which is not as hard as classical music so overall violin is definitely harder.

I am a violin player, and I'm pretty good.

And yes, it is hard. Especially because

the notes are not set in a certain key

like the sax. On the violin, you have

to find the tune. You also have to play

certain parts in different positions.

I cannot play 5th position and up.

Too hard for me. I have to sit and

take an hour or so to figure it out.

On violin, you have to know the

style and techniques. You must

know when to apply pressure on

the bow at certain speed.

But you know what? The violin is a

beautiful instrument :) It's worth it.

I love playing it. It makes me feel good.

If you are looking to playing the violin, I

recommend it 100000%.

Good Luck!

Violin is much harder. When you play sax, you put a finger in one place and it plays that note perfectly. On violin, your fingers position alters if the finger is in tune. I play both, and sax is much easier.

Normally, I would go into my speech about how no one instrument is harder than the other, etc etc, but really violin is much harder than sax. I believe sax is the easiest instrument.

I play the viola, it's pretty much a violin with a deeper sound and I think that playing the violin is great but I recomend the sax.
