Everytime I type in something that has to do with Opera in Y!A, I see POTO pop up everywhere. I thought POTO was just broadway with high notes. Not actual Opera. o.O It's starting to get annoying. -.-

Poll: Do you like Emmy or Sarah Brightman better as Christine? I like Sarah Brightman better any day. POTO is meant to be haunting, not "lite" sounding and Emmys high notes aren't as strong. :)

You've had many right answers to the question. Phantom of the Opera is NOT an opera, but a Broadway musical. It pops up on search here (and elsewhere) because the word 'opera' is in the title.

I want to address some misconceptions about what is 'opera' in the previous answers, though. There are plenty of opera where both spoken dialogues and musical numbers are used. The whole subgenre of Singspiel (like Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio or The Magic Flute, and many other German operas) have spoken dialogues between sung numbers. Bizet's most popular opera, Carmen, was originally created with spoken dialogues (though another composer later replaced the spoken part with sung recitative).

Also, many (if not most) opera stories were taken from novels... And many operas have been made into films... and even a Broadway show (Rent... came from Puccini's La Boheme).

As for the poll part: I personally like Sarah Brightman better as Christine Daae (I actually liked her Broadway musical voice much more than her operatic one. She just sounds a lot more at home in the former). They both sing with the aid of microphone, however, so I don't dare judge whose high notes are stronger. You can make a mouse sound like a lion with the turn of the amplifier knob.

PotO is technically not an opera. An opera uses music throughout the entire show, while a musical uses music during certain plot events. If there is normal dialogue at all, it's not an opera.

And Sarah Brightman makes a better Christine singing-wise, but Emmy is hotter....

You are correct in my opinion because...... it was a book. Then it was a broadway musical... movies were made about it.... so yeah its not opera, its a musical about opera. Some of the songs sung in it are opera style, some songs are just songs.. but I agree... it is a musical and I like Sarah Brightman too, but I also like Emmy Rossum... any music like that I enjoy listening to, so it doesn't matter to me who sings it.

well yea, no one ever said it was an opera...

the musical is about a phantom at an opera house, doesnt necessarily mean its an opera :P

i could understand why if you type the word "opera" it would come up with POTO though.. i mean it has the word "opera" in its title.

"Phantom of the Opera" is a Musical, before that it was a silent movie, before that it was a book by Gaston Leroux.

... I do not care for Sarah Brightman at all.

it's a musical. the reason it comes up when you search is because the word opera is in the title. It's called phantom of the opera because it's about a phantom in an opera house - it was originally a book.

Not only is NOT opera (it is a musical located in an opera house) - it is not classical music either. It is pop (popular).

So the correct category for questions relating to POTO would be the pop category.

Correct. It's a musical. I like Sarah Brightman & don't know Emmy. ALW wrote the part for his then wife Sarah.

Its based on an Opera...

"Christine is eventually given a position in the chorus at the Paris Opera House. Not long after she arrives there, she begins hearing a voice which sings to her and speaks to her. "

The title is what the movie is about...
