Hi there,

Bach didn't actually write any Ave Maria. But, Charles Gounod composed Ave Maria in 1859 during the romantic era, based on the harmony and texture of J.S.Bach's Prelude No.1 in C Major from Well-Tempered Clavier Book I (BWV 846).

Gounod's Ave Maria is actually written in F major, not C major.

Maybe Gounod was given a task in harmony class to write a counter melody to Bach's prelude in C major and that he was lucky enough to save his homework!

Sounds like you've been listening carefully to both pieces.

I hope this helped you.

You're thinking of GOUNOD's Ave Maria. The accompaniment to this piece is almost the same as Bach's prelude in C major (WTC I). There's a discrepancy near the end, I think. But it's basically the same music, and he added a new melody above. Don't remember what Gounod's original key was...someone else said it was F major, and I can't confirm or refute that. Probably right.

Bach did not write that Ave Maria above his C major Prelude.

NO! The "Ave Maria" you're talking about is a countermelody of J.S. Bach's Prelude in C [WTC, Book I] composed by Charles Gounod.

They sound the same but one composer based his idea off of the others, so no they are not the same.
