If you've never done a double reed before, good luck. I'm an oboe major in college and let me tell you- You will get tired quickly or get dizzy on a MH reed.

As I said, I'm an oboe major in music school- Think of the upper range fingerings on your clair... the BAGED that you use with your register key are exactly the same. (I didn't forget F- that's totally weird on oboe). when you release the octave key, the same thing comes out 1 octave lower same fingering (surprise, surprise).

The worst of it for you will probably be getting used to working a double reed because it's much harder than it seems.

Best of luck- the world needs more oboists.

You do have some of the technique for playing the oboe since you can control a single reed. The medium hard reed is too hard to start on. you will need to weaken that reed to play it. Very carefully in a V shape using an emory board rub off some of the cane at the bottom of the carved piece of the reed. On both sides. Do it equally. What you do to one side , do to the other. Oboe is frustrating to start but once you start it is a fascinating journey into competence. Have fun.

The Metal rods do not work. I have been playing and teaching oboe for over 30 years. Take your time and enjoy.

You won't want to start playing the oboe with a medium hard reed. It'll be like blowing your brains out! Don't bother with the reeds with the metal things on them.

It is true that the oboe is a hard instrument, but once you get used to the whole double reed situation and new fingerings it's a lot of fun.

Good luck!
